Dissecting the dirt 2025

Step into the world of advanced archaeology with our dissecting the dirt club tailored for young enthusiasts aged 16 to 25!

Unlock a realm of transferable skills such as project management and leadership as you assist in organizing and supporting our Young Archaeologists Club. Led by our community archaeologist, Alexis, these full-day sessions offer immersive hands-on experiences designed to equip you with invaluable skills for the future.

You'll kickstart by contributing to our Young Archaeologists’ Club, then progress to planning and leading upcoming sessions later in the term. Dive into afternoons filled with in-depth, practical archaeological training, honing skills essential not only in the field but across various career paths.

January 18: stratigraphic analysis

Dive into the importance of stratigraphy in the archaeological process. Learn how sites form through layers and how recording processes during excavation are used to analyse the development and changes over time. This analysis is essential for interpreting an archaeological excavation and forms the core of understanding site evolution.

February 15: finds processing

Discover the protocols and techniques involved in preparing an archaeological archive from an excavation. Learn how finds are washed, dried, marked, bagged, and finally stored. This session emphasizes the importance of producing systematic archives to ensure that excavation records are catalogued correctly for both present and future analysis.

March 15: spot dating & phasing

How do we phase our matrices? Matrices form the backbone of an archaeological excavation and when combined with specialist analysis can be phased by period. This makes it possible to analyse how a site has changed over time, both in terms of use and development. In this session, we’ll cover an introduction to using specialist evidence to determine a site’s chronology.

April 26: desk based assessments

Desk based assessments are generally prepared prior to an archaeological excavation.  And are important pieces of research as historical maps are analysed alongside data from the Sites and Monuments Record. Together we’ll explore the importance of desk-based assessments and the crucial role they play in archaeology today.
