Bishop Grindall mug

£5.00
1

This mug is decorated with a caricature by Kenneth Andersson, a Swedish artist, of Edmund Grindal Bishop of London from 1559 to 1570. Grindal was born in Cumberland in 1519. A Protestant, he went abroad during the Catholic Queen Mary I’s reign and was made Bishop of London by Elizabeth I on his return. The first of Fulham’s “botanising bishops” he introduced the tamarisk to England and sent grapes grown at Fulham as an annual gift to the Queen. He became Archbishop of York in 1570 and Canterbury in 1576.
