Southside House provides a charmingly eccentric backdrop to the lives of the Pennington Mellor Munthe families. Maintained in traditional style and crowded with family possessions, it offers a wealth of fascinating stories as well as mementos from the likes of the Duke of Wharton, Lady Hamilton and others.

Re-fashioned in the William and Mary style, the rooms contain much of the furniture the Penningtons brought to it, plus a superb collection of art and historical objects reflecting centuries of ownership. Hilda Pennington married Axel Munthe, whose most famous book, The Story of St Michele, briefly outsold the Bible and remains amongst the ten best sellers of the 20th century.

Her youngest son, Malcolm, a major in the S.O.E. during WWII, was responsible for much of its later preservation. He painstakingly restored and transformed Southside into a stage on which his perceptions of family history were presented.

The visit will commence at 2.45pm with tea and coffee, followed by a guided tour of just over an hour, after which you can explore the gardens at leisure.

Tickets are £18 per person including tea, coffee and booking fee.
